Message I've been looking into this some more. Note the FSM indicates oil pressure should be around 11 psi at idle. What the manual doesn't say is that pressure is a strong function of idle speed such that a slight drop in speed means a noticeable drop in psi. Are you sure you were seeing down to 5 psi at 750 rpm?

On the high side the system is throttle by the oil cooler pressure relief valve such that under normal operating temps oil pressure won't get much above 60. There is no thermostat in the oil cooler system nor does it need one if you really think about it. You only need the cooler operating at higher engine speeds. At lower rpms the engine doesn't have the hp to develop enough heat such that you need the oil cooler.

Obviously you can manually override this system the way you've described and give you extra confidence in the oil system at the track where it really matters.
